Summer is upon us and it’s the time of year when people like to enjoy the outdoors. With that said, it’s easy to forget about your roof during the summer.  Here are some roof maintenance tips to help you safeguard your roof system for the season.

Remove Debris:
The accumulation of debris can be problematic as it impedes the intended flow of water.  Built-up soot and pine straw is a great example of the types of debris that prefers to hang out in valleys and low spots of your roof.  This debris can cause water to pool up and flow into unintended areas of the home.

Clean Gutters:
You’ll want to clean your gutters to be sure they’re functioning properly. Gutter systems help carry large volumes of water away from the home.  If your gutters are full of debris, they will accumulate water, allowing water to intrude into the home.

Trim Branches and Limbs:
It’s amazing just how much trees can grow in a couple of seasons.  You’ll want to walk around the perimeter of your home and inspect for low-hanging branches. These branches often act as an access point for critters who are eager to enter your home.  Low hanging branches can also damage shingles by brushing the protective granules off the face of the shingles.

Inspect Rooftop Accessories:
Over time, the elements tend to degrade certain roofing materials.  High winds take their toll on rooftop accessories and are unforgiving to unsealed shingles. Additionally, Ultraviolet Rays degrade shingles and silicones/sealants.   It is always prudent to inspect your rooftop accessories to be sure they’re properly sealed, and inspect for any loose or missing shingles.
